Larkin gets a “W”
larkin on podium
OK, so it’s been an interesting 2008 for Aaron Larkin, to say the least. After starting the year with a tie for the Moomba Title in Australia, he fought long and hard all season staying consistently in the top 10. It was the off-the-water part that was the struggle for our big Kiwi. Season long ankle troubles and a fractured disc in his back mid-season kept him sidelined between events, and in pain during them. The guy is truly an animal. Pain seemed to be subsiding with his summer ailments entering October with the slower travel schedule and a little down time. Feeling better and working on conditioning, the Big Azza went out for his normal training road bike ride when an old lady ran a red light right in front of him. Yes, he T-boned the lady wrecking himself yet again during the 2008 season. He was severely down and out (bed ridden) till boarding the plane to head south for a week’s training before the final events of the year.

We’re happy to report that there is a happy ending to a season of pain and down time for Aaron. Although he waited till the very last minute, Aaron won the final stop of the World Cup in Doha, Qatar. A huge congratulations and thanks go out to him for a massive effort through the 2008 season!

From the World Cup website:
With six Finalists, the Men’s Slalom event was also a thriller. The World Record holder, Chris Parrish USA, had already taken first place last weekend in Putrajaya Malaysia. However, the season leader and two time World Cup season winner, Jodi Fisher GBR, had experience on his side, setting the stage for a great battle. The Final was full of upsets. World Slalom Champion Thomas Degasperi ITA set the pace with a great score of five Buoys on the 11.25m line in a tricky breeze. The star of the Semi-Finals, 20-year-old Jonathon Travers US, was not so fortunate in the Finals with a score of 1.5 buoys on the 12m line. The World Record holder Chris Parrish added two Buoys to Degasperis score to try to repeat his earlier Putrajaya Malaysia success. However, it was the giant Kiwi, Aaron Larkin NZL, who took the honors with just one Buoy better than Parrish. That winning score was two Buoys on the very short 10.75m line. Aaron Larkin has had an outstanding year and now adds his first World Cup Slalom title to his impressive victories list.

Whitney McClintock Interview
When I called to catch up with Whitney McClintock for this interview, she was in class… and still answered the phone. We’re not sure if that makes her a loyal Radar Skier to take my call, OR an inattentive student already texting her way through an hour and fifteen minutes. For now, we should give her the benefit of the doubt and choose the former. Now moving into the fall, Whit is taking a full load at the University of Central Florida and still chasing points to move her ranking up from 6th on the Elite List. Gutsy skiing and impressive finishes landed her 5th on the MasterCraft Pro Tour in 2008. Her first major Pro title is now under her belt as the Russia World Cup Champ. Her World Champion bloodline is proving to hold ground. I caught up with her for some candid questioning…

Larkin Goes Big:
Aaron Larkin proved to be on his game early in the season this year by standing strong all weekend in Melbourne, Australia. The Moomba Masters is the first Major event of the year and Larkin won the first round and tied for the title on Moomba Monday. It came down to ½ buoy at 41 off for the title. Rumor has it that Aaron has changed up his gate and is turning his offside like never before. Congrats to The Big Azza and good luck for the rest of the season.
